5:30 Wake up
![](images/spacer.gif)
It is still dark when the morning bell clangs to wake the over 500 boys
and girls sleeping in the SKSN school. The youngest boys sleep on the classroom
floors on thin rugs so their first task of the day is to roll their bedding
away, pack up their small amount of possessions into their tin trunks, and
sweep the classroom floor with twig brushes ready for the day's study.

As the red Rajasthan sun rises over the sandy fields surrounding the school
the children wash in the communal bathrooms and shower blocks. Calipers
and crutches stay outside as they queue for the showers, the children use
whichever limbs are most mobile - be it hands or one foot - to dexterously
manoeuvre themselves into the shower and onto the toilet. They also wash
their clothes and hang them out to dry.
