Dr Bhairoon Singh Bhati - Secretary of SKSN
At the mere age of 23, Dr Bhati gave up a secure and stable government job in favour of working as a social worker. Today, he is the Secretary of SKSN, a position he was elected to in 2002. Since taking over the reins as Secretary, the school population of SKSN has increased from 240 children to over 500 physically disabled students, ranging between the ages of 5 to 20 years. They are all provided with free boarding education. In addition to this, he also holds the post of the Executive Director of ODTTRT. He has actively participated in the detoxification treatment of addicts carried out at both, the outreach camps and the de-addiction centre at Manaklao.
Dr Bhati's biggest achievement has been to fly 2 squads of 10 physically challenged boys and girls, for two years running to the United Kingdom, to participate in the 'Mini Games', a mini Para-Olympics sporting tournament organized by Disability Sports England. These students travelled abroad for the first time in their lives.
One of the other projects to come to fruition since Dr Bhati took charge is a self-contained rehabilitation centre for the Gujarat children, who suddenly became handicapped through the catastrophic earthquake in 2001. These traumatized Gujarat children of all ages are being provided psychological counselling and physical education to overcome their disability, an expertise that SKSN has fine-tuned over the years.
Another significant project is an 'Aids & Appliances Workshop', in association with 'Take Action', a voluntary organization from the UK. The workshop is located on the SKSN campus and manufactures custom-made callipers for the physically challenged students as per their personal requirements. This project is also an additional avenue in the vocational training of some of the older SKSN students.
Dr Bhati holds an MA, Ph.D. in Sociology on Opium Addiction Problems in Rajasthan, from the Jai Narain Vyas University of Jodhpur, Rajasthan. He completed his Fellowship from the School for Addiction Studies, Addiction Research Foundation in Toronto, Canada.
